ORIGIN
Afghanistan has been one of the world's primary sources of lapis lazuli through most of recorded history. Most of the country's production comes from thousands of small mines in the Badakhshan Province; this is an area with a destitute economy. Gemstone mining is the only significant source of outside revenue. Mining for Lapis occurred in the Badakhshan Province of northeastern Afghanistan as early as 7000 BC. The Lapis used to make beads, small jewelry items, and small sculptures.
WHAT MAKES LAPIS
LAZUIL VALUABLE
Having a hardness scale of 5 to 5.5, Lapis Lazuli is a blue rock made of several different minerals, including lazurite, sodalite, hauyne, calcite (which shows as white flecks), and pyrite (which adds a golden yellow sparkle). Lapis Village is one of the oldest gemstones that have been collected for over 7000 years, by the Egyptian Gods. The name Lapis Lazuli literally translates into Blue Stone, representing the magnificent color of the stone.
WHERE DO LAPIS LAZULI
COME FROM
For the entire history stretching across thousands of years, Afghanistan has remained the epicenter for mining the most exquisite and royal lapis lazuli stones. Even today, Afghanistan accounts for a significant share of the highest quality Lapis production. Other mining areas for Lapis include Pakistan, Russia, Chile, Canada, Angola, and the US. However, the stones extracted from Afghanistan's mines are still valued above others because of their purity, splendor, and magnificence.
